How Much Can I Borrow for a Trailer?

Your borrowing limit isn't a fixed multiple of your income. It's worked out from what you can comfortably repay each month after everything else. Here's how to estimate it.

It starts with what's left over

Lenders take your income, subtract your living expenses and your existing repayments, and look at what's left. They also add a buffer, so the loan still works if things get a bit tighter. The repayment you can comfortably support decides how much you can borrow.

What a repayment buys you

This table shows roughly how much a monthly repayment supports at 11% interest, with no deposit, balloon or fees. It's a guide only.

Monthly repaymentOver 3 yearsOver 5 yearsOver 7 years
$300about $9,200about $13,800about $17,500
$450about $13,700about $20,700about $26,300
$600about $18,300about $27,600about $35,000
$900about $27,500about $41,400about $52,600

A longer term stretches the same repayment further, but you pay more interest in total.

Things that reduce what you can borrow

  • Credit card limits. Lenders usually count a share of your limit as a repayment, even if the card is paid off each month. Lowering unused limits can help.
  • Other loans and buy now, pay later accounts.
  • Higher living costs, such as rent, dependants or big regular bills.
  • Irregular income that's hard to verify.

Things that help

  • A deposit or trade-in, so you need to borrow less.
  • Paying down or closing cards and small debts before applying.
  • Steady income that shows clearly on your bank statements.
  • A secured loan, which usually comes with a lower rate.

Borrow what's comfortable, not the maximum

The most a lender will approve isn't necessarily what you should borrow. Leave room for rego, insurance, tyres and the unexpected. Try a few numbers in the calculator to find a repayment that fits.

Common Questions

Each lender sets its own limits. For most buyers, what you can afford to repay is the real limit.
Yes. Lenders usually count part of your credit limit as a commitment, even if you pay the card off in full.
A joint application with a partner can, because both incomes are counted. Both of you are then responsible for the loan.
